The State of New Jersey Judiciary has prepared instructions for the expungement of an adult criminal record, and has posted them on its web site. A button linking to these instructions is provided below. You will need the Adobe Reader software on your computer to access these instructions.

For juvenile expungements, please contact the Essex County Family Court Juvenile Services Unit at (973) 693-6775.

For Essex County practice, the following should be noted. Expungement proceedings are generally non-appearance, and there will be no hearing in court, unless you are told otherwise.

An applicant need not prepare his or her own Final Order (form D). The Probation Department must be served with an Order For Hearing and Final Expungement Order if the applicant received Probation, PTI, or a Conditional Discharge.
