| The office of a district attorney
or prosecutor in a large urban area is usually the focus of ongoing media
and public attention, and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office is no exception.
Due to the relatively high volume of criminal cases in Essex County (about
20% of all reported crimes in the State of New Jersey), and the relative
intensity of many of them (Essex accounts for about 25% of all first and
second degree crimes Statewide), the Essex County Prosecutor's Office must
provide a constant stream of information to the press regarding significant
cases. The Office is also responsible to coordinate with and assist local
police departments in providing media and public information. In addition,
it must continuously provide information to government leaders and agencies
regarding its investigatory and prosecutorial activities. The Office is
also becoming increasingly pro-active in providing information to academic
and community groups interested in policy formation and in practical steps
to help avoid crime, e.g. through its Community Justice
Program. In sum, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office recognizes the
public's need for information regarding the issue of crime, and is responding
through increased emphasis on data collection, analysis, and presentation
to interested parties. This web site represents an additional method for
the conveyance of useful information to the people of Essex County and to
all who may work, study, visit, own property in, or otherwise be concerned
with the life of this County.
Media relations within the Essex County Prosecutor's Office are carried out by a designated Press Agent, under the direction of the Executive Assistant Prosecutor. Although the Prosecutor remains the chief spokesperson, and many of the Office's approximately 150 assistant prosecutors speak directly with press sources when appropriate, all media requests are directed to and through the Press Agent's office. Furthermore, the ECPO web site was developed and is maintained by the Media Services function. The Executive Assistant Prosecutor is assisted by the Senior Program Analyst / Web Site Coordinator and two Clerical Supervisors. To contact the Media office, please call (973) 621-4021. |
